Testing Information

Admissions Requirements are as follows:

ESL test:

  • The school uses two ESL tests for Applicants:
    • Language Use
    • Listening
  • MA ESL Tests:
    • Languages Use with a score of 82+
    • Listening with a score of 65+
  • DA ESL Tests:
    • Listening with a score of 61+
  • ESL Tests must be passed before a student can attempt any other Accuplacer tests.

Reading and Writing tests:

  • A score of 221+ is required in at least ONE of the Accuplacer Reading or Writing tests.
  • Applicants can take the reading and writing tests twice. If an applicant doe not achieve the required score, then they must wait six (6) months prior to taking it again.

Arithmetic test:

  • There is no admissions requirement for Arithmetic.

These scores are requirements to be granted entry to NYSMDA.

Your Admissions Representative will advise you on what tests you are required to take.

The Placement requirements are as follows:

  • A student must achieve a score of 237+ in BOTH Reading and Writing to be placed in College level English. 
    • A score of between 221-236 in these tests will place the student in Remedial English Class.
  • A student must achieve a score of 237+ in Arithmetic to be placed in College level Math.
    • A score of below 237 will place a student in Remedial Math Class

These scores are used to place students in College or Remedial Classes.

(Note: Dental Assisting Students are NOT required to take the Arithmetic Accuplacer test.)

Who is required to take the ESL Tests?

  • Applicants who have provided their proof of High School Education in a language other than English.
  • Admissions Representatives will notify prospective students if they are otherwise required to take ESL testing.
  • ESL tests must be passed at the required admissions scores before a student can move on to other Accuplacer testing.

Exemptions where ESL is required:

  • Applicants who can present an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education indicating successful completion of a suitable English course with a grade of Pass or "C" or better, depending on the institutions system of grading.
  • Applicants must present evidence that they have achieved TOEFL based test score of 90 or above.

Your Admissions Representative will advise you on what tests you are required to take.

Prospective Medical Assisting Students are required to take three tests:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Arithmetic

Unless otherwise exempt.

The admissions requirement for these tests is as follows:

  • A score of 221 or above in the Reading OR Writing test. 
  • There is no minimum score required for Arithmetic to be granted admission to the school.

The Placement guidelines are as follows:

  • A student must achieve a score of 237+ in BOTH Reading and Writing to be placed in College level English.

  • A student must achieve a score of 237+ in Arithmetic to be placed in College level Math.

  • Writing

Unless otherwise exempt.

The admissions requirement for these tests is as follows:

  • A score of 221 or above in the Reading OR Writing test.

(Note: Dental Students are NOT required to take the Arithmetic Accuplacer test.)

Your Admissions Representative will advise you on what tests you are required to take.

If a prospective student achieves any of the milestones listed below withing the last five years, they will be exempt from NYSMDA's Accuplacer placement testing requirements.

  • Official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education indication successful completion of an equivalent remedial course with a grade of Pass of "C" or better, depending on the institution's system of grading
  • SAT verbal score of 510 pr above
  • SAT math score of 510 or above
  • A grade of 80 or above on the New York State Math Regent's examination in Sequential Math 2 or 3 or Math A
  • TOEFL Test score of 80 or above on the Internet Based Test (iBT)

Furthermore:

  • Students who provide evidence of a bachelors degree from an accredited U.S. Institution of higher education or equivalent foreign educational institution are exempt from placement testing.
  • Depending on further evaluation and assessment of the student's academic background, those holding an associate degree may be considered exempt from placement testing.
  • Students who have successfully completed credit bearing college level course in English and Math with a grade of "C" or better at accredited post secondary institutions are also exempt from placement testing.
  • All students with foreign credentials must provide the College with a copy of these credentials evaluated by an evaluation service - and translated to English - if applicable, to be exempt from placement testing.
  • All remedial course placement decisions are made at the discretion of the VPAA or his/her designee after a careful evaluation of a student's overall academic record prior to matriculation.

Your Admissions Representative will advise you on what tests you are required to take.

The Digital Learning Assessment is given only to our prospective MA students.

It does not require any study, it is a survey to assess an individuals readiness for remote learning.

Your Admissions Representative will advise if you need to submit this survey.

ESL Testing and samples

If an applicant provides a non-English or foreign Diploma as proof of high school graduation, they will be required to take the necessary ESL Tests according to their chosen study field.

  • The ESL Listening test is required for prospective DA and MA students.
  • The ESL Language Use test is required for prospective MA students only.

Accuplacer Testing and Samples

All prospective students are required to take the Reading and Writing Accuplacer tests.

The Arithmetic Accuplacer test is required only for prospective MA students.

Other helpful Study links

  • To practice online for any Accuplacer test, go to https://practice.accuplacer.org/ and sign up for a free account. You will be able to select the specific exam you want to prepare for. "Learn as you go" will explain the answers as you answer each one. The practice exam will show how well you do in each domain at the end of the test, so you can determine which areas to focus on.  The practice questions are intended to be taken on a computer, and may not work on a phone or tablet. You may need to change your settings to allow pop-ups to use this site.
  • Go to https://novelnewyork.org/. You will need to authenticate that you are a resident of New York State, either by location or by using a library card number. Locate the database Gale Presents: Peterson's Test and Career Prep. You will need to sign up. Once you are logged in, go to Browse Menu > Improve a Test Score > College Prep > Accuplacer > Accuplacer Exam Prep Course. Select the topic that you want; Production of Writing, Reading Comprehension, and Arithmetic.

  • For more preparation for the arithmetic test, you can try the Khan Academy arithmetic page at https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic. It is not specific for this test, but you can select the areas you want to work on.
